How to Prepare for IPL Treatment?

We advise our patients to stay away from direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before your session. Avoid tanning beds and self-tanning products during this period. Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids a few days before your session. Also, avoid waxing or chemical peels on the treatment area. These precautions lower the chances of skin irritation. We may also perform a patch test before your first session.

IPL usually works best when your skin is not tanned. Therefore, many people prefer treatment during the fall or winter. However, it can be done in summer with strict sun protection.

Remember: Mostly IPL sessions don’t take more than 20 to 45 minutes. So, you can schedule it during a short break.

Intense Pulsed Light Safety And Side Effects

Yes, IPL photofacial is safe when a professional performs it. You may notice short-term effects like slight swelling, redness or itching, which usually resolve over time. It also uses non-ionizing radiation, which does not cause cancer.

Sometimes, the skin tone may appear darker or lighter after treatment. These changes are called skin discoloration and hypopigmentation respectively. The risk increases with sun exposure or improper settings. Therefore, proper technique and aftercare are essential. Photofacial can cause pigment changes in people with darker skin tones if not performed carefully.

Intense pulsed light can also lead to serious complications if the doctor is inexperienced or doesn’t maintain hygiene during treatment. These rare complications are burns, blisters, Infections, paradoxical hair growth, or eye injury. It can also trigger Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) in people with a history of cold sores.

Note: We use advanced devices with controlled energy settings. Our experienced doctor, Charles Ivester, adjusts the treatment based on your skin type. Protective eyewear is also used to keep your eyes safe, and we usually avoid treating areas with tattoos.

What to Expect After Intense Pulsed Light Treatment?

You may notice mild redness on your skin immediately after the session. Still, many people resume their daily routine on the same day. Dark spots usually darken before fading. They may look like small coffee-ground particles on the skin. But these spots usually peel off within a few days.

Although mild swelling can last for 24 to 48 hours, your skin gradually looks clearer and more even within a week.

Post-Treatment Instructions

You can gently wash your face after 24 hours. However, avoid hot showers and heavy workouts for a day. You may also wear light makeup the next day if your skin feels calm, but avoid harsh skincare products for a few days. Daily sunscreen is also very important to protect your skin.

Intense Pulsed Light For Dry Eyes

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a long-term eye condition and a leading cause of dry eyes due to tear evaporation. It occurs when the oil glands in the eyelids get obstructed and produce poor-quality oil (meibum). So, the tears evaporate too quickly, leaving your eyes dry.

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment reduces inflammation around the eyelids and allows the thickened oils within the glands to flow with tears, minimizing irritation. IPL also reduces bacteria and Demodex mites that may be worsening the irritation.

Intense Pulsed Light Treatment For Acne and Pigmentation

We target melanin (melanocytes) with light pulses to treat pigmentation. This heat breaks excess melanin into small fragments that your body gradually removes. IPL fades all the dark spots, age spots, PIH, and freckles. However, deeper conditions such as melasma may not fully respond to IPL.

Our board-certified doctor, Charles Ivester, targets acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) to reduce acne. The intense pulsed light disrupts their activity and reduces their growth. It also heats the oil glands to prevent pores from clogging and lowers acne inflammation.

Intense Pulsed Light For Hair Removal

IPL is a semi-permanent treatment for removing unwanted hair, but it requires maintenance over time. It works best on darker hair. We weaken unwanted hair follicles with pulses of light energy so the hair becomes thinner and lighter, and then stop producing new hairs in some areas.

Please remember that areas with hormonal activity may show regrowth over time, and results vary depending on hair thickness and color.

IPL Treatment For Spider Veins

IPL treatment targets spider veins (small superficial veins) with controlled pulses of light. It heats the vessels, which shrinks them. As a result, the body gradually clears them away. Your skin gradually appears clearer and more balanced. But, you may need a series of sessions to achieve the desired outcome.

IPL vs Other Skin Treatments

IPL can treat several concerns but not all within one session. However, chemical peels focus more on surface exfoliation. On the other hand, Microneedling works better for deeper scars and texture.

We assess your skin and then guide you about the treatments that will work best at Royale Med Spa. So visit us for consultation if you are confused between different skin treatments.

IPL Therapy

IPL For Skin Rejuvenation

Our physician uses light pulses to heat the deeper layers of your skin gently. This heat activates fibroblasts to produce more collagen, which helps keep the skin firm and flexible. The photofacial reduces pigmentation and improves skin tone. It smooths uneven texture and makes your skin look fresh and brighter. It also reduces sun damage and pigmentation, so your skin looks youthful and clear.
